The Head of Ngawonggo Village, Noor Hafid Kalamullah, returned home with fresh inspiration from China after joining the Indonesian Village Cadre Training Program. He is now committed to realizing a progressive, independent, and competitive village through the professional and sustainable management of local potential.
The Head of Ngawonggo Village, Ceper District, Klaten Regency, Noor Hafid Kalamullah, S.H., brought back valuable insights after participating in the Indonesian Village Cadre Training Program in the People’s Republic of China, held from July 14 to August 4, 2026. The program was attended by 25 selected Village Heads from across Indonesia.
This program was officially invited by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China. It was organized by the International Cooperation Service Center and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and coordinated by the Ministry of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions of the Republic of Indonesia together with the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta. All activities were fully funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China as part of capacity-building cooperation for village officials.
Noor Hafid said the training was not only classroom-based, but also included direct field visits to progressive villages, modern agricultural areas, cooperatives, village-based industries, and innovation centers in Beijing, Yunnan, and Hunan.
“From China I learned that village progress is built through strong leadership, consistent planning, innovation, and active community participation. A progressive village doesn’t mean abandoning its identity, but rather developing local potential with the support of technology and good governance,” he said.
This experience is highly relevant for Ngawonggo Village — a village covering nearly 158 hectares with more than 6,000 residents, famously known as the “Village That Never Sleeps.”
The nickname comes from the fact that economic activities run all day long. In the morning, residents work the farmland. From afternoon to night, the metal casting industry operates non-stop. At night, religious life and community activities remain active in mosques, prayer rooms, and various social gatherings.
For Noor Hafid, this rich potential is a strong foundation to take Ngawonggo to the next level not only strong in agriculture and industry, but also excellent in public services, strengthening MSMEs, government digitalization, BUMDes development, and improving human resources.
“The biggest lesson from the Bamboo Curtain Country is not to make Ngawonggo exactly like villages in China, but how we can manage the potential we already have in a more professional, innovative, and sustainable way,” he stated.
He hopes the ideas he gained can soon be turned into concrete programs that directly impact community welfare.
At the end of his statement, Noor Hafid expressed deep appreciation to the Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Yandri Susanto, Deputy Minister Mr. Ahmad Riza Patria, all staff of the Ministry of Villages, the Government of the People’s Republic of China, and all organizers who provided this valuable opportunity for Indonesian village heads.
“The knowledge and experience we gained will be the foundation to realize a Ngawonggo Village that is more progressive, independent, innovative, and prosperous. Because building a village is essentially preparing for the future,” he concluded.
